Store bought computers often have hidden compromises. Why buy a computer when you can build your own? Learn from engineers and computer professionals how to build your own desktop computer and then build it.

This workshop will have three sessions as follows:

  • Session 1, Saturday, November 9, 2019, 9:30 am – noon, Santori Library. In this 1st session, we’ll go through the components of a computer and what you’ll need. Participants will then come up with list of components for ordering and purchase to be reviewed during Session 2.

  • Session 2, Saturday, November 23, 2019, Santori Library. In this session, an engineer or a computer professional will review and discuss your list with you, on an appointment basis, during the day. Participants will then obtain the parts for Session 3.

  • Session 3, Saturday, December 14, 2019, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm, Santori Library. Participants will bring the parts they obtained and assemble their computers. Experienced people, including engineers and computer professionals, will be on hand to assist with building and, if necessary, troubleshooting. Lunch will be provided.

Please note:  Workshop cost is $100. Workshop size is limited to 12 participants, minimum of 4. Participants will be responsible for the cost of computer components/software and assembling their computer. Component/software costs for desktop computers will vary, but typically range from $600 to $2,000 (and beyond) depending on system capability.

Details:  This workshop is open to students 13 and above. (Adults welcome too!) However, a responsible adult must complete the registration form. As this workshop involves having students identify what parts and components are necessary to order, we will have the students complete a Google Form listing parts to be obtained for review during the second session. The responsible adult will receive an e-mail copy of the form with the ability to edit. Homework for the workshop consist of identifying desired computer build components for Session 2 and then obtaining the components for Session 3. Younger students may need some adult assistance.

Money Back Guarantee:  If you are not satisfied with the workshop by the end of Session 2, we will provide a full refund of the workshop fee. No refunds will be granted after Session 2.

Proceeds will go to Go Team 2704, the non-profit support organization for Roaring Robotics, a FIRST Robotics Competition team for students 13 - 18.

By the way… (A message from our sponsor)
