How Much Does it Cost?

Updated: May 30, 2019

Roaring Robotics is generously sponsored by many corporate sponsors such as Make-It-Here and Caterpillar. The corporate contributions are valued at over $2k per student. As such, we are able to keep costs to families relatively low, especially in comparison to many other robotics teams and high school extra-curricular activities. Our desire is for every student to be able participate independent of their family’s individual situation. If there are challenges which could affect a student’s participation, please let our team leadership know.

Season Contribution

For the 2019 - 2020 season, we ask team families to make a suggested donation of $100 for a recommended donation to cover the cost of properly outfitting our team. Check out our blog article here for more specific information.

Team Meals

We will ask families to contribute towards at least 2-3 team meals for all day meetings in addition to an occasional potluck. For team meals, one family typically provides a main course while another family provides side dishes and desserts. The families providing the meals also provide the serving utensils for the food they provide. However, the team provides eating utensils and dinnerware along with waters to drink.

Team Events

We typically compete in about four competitions each year as a team. Families are typically responsible for arranging transportation for their own students (but carpooling is encouraged when practical). The usual events are:

  • Rock River Off-Season Competition (late July) in Rockford - Some of the team typically goes to Rockford Friday evening for setting up and practicing with the robot and they staying overnight. However, doing so is optional as the matches are on the following Saturday and can be done as a day trip. However, there are still food expenses for the day.

  • Flapjack Challenge (early December) in Winnebago - This is a day trip. However, there are meal costs not to mention raffle baskets and bake sales.

  • Central Illinois Regional (mid-March) in Peoria - This is the competition that requires overnights. Most families stay overnight for Thursday and Friday nights. We have typically been able to obtain hotel pricing for about $120 per night including tax. In addition, there are meal costs associated with the competition.

  • Another regional competition which may require overnight travel such as the Central Illinois Regional described above.
